As part of a semester-long commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of Soviet Communism in East Central Europe, the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies and the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas announce a K-16 Workshop for Educators, “Reimagining Central Europe: Transition and Identity.” The workshop offers a comparative perspective on the 1989 Revolutions in Poland and Czechoslovakia through both grass roots experiences and the personal lives and political struggles of the leaders, Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel. The goal is to develop applications of this knowledge in the K-16 classroom. The workshop will be held during the Velvet Revolution Week which will be filled with exciting events.

8:30-9:00 a.m. - Arrival and registration. Coffee and breakfast snacks will be served.
9:00-9:45 a.m. - Gallery tour
10:00-11:45 a.m. - Roundtable
Noon - Introductions & lesson plans discussion

THE WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE THE SPENCER'S CENTRAL EUROPEAN COLLECTION GALLERY TOUR AND A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION.
TEACHERS WILL RECEIVE FREE OF CHARGE MATERIALS - a book and the Spencer's Central European Collection catalogue that includes works of famous Czech artist Alphonse Mucha MuchaFoundation.org.

To qualify, you must: a) attend the workshop, b) create a lesson based on the workshop, and c) use the lesson in your classroom. We will feature your lesson plan on our website and share it with other teachers.

In conjunction with the K-12 Teachers Workshop the Velvet Revolution week features a staged reading of Karel Capek’s play, Rossum’s Universal Robots, newly translated by Slavic PhD student, Eva Hruska, and adapted for the post-communist era by Theater Professor John Staniunas.
