To promote collegiality and cooperation among
colleagues at KU, Kansas Regents universities, and other institutions of higher
education in the Central Plains region, the KU Center for Russian, East European
and Eurasian Studies (CREES) established a Fellows Program.
Objectives:
The CREES Fellows Program promotes:
- trust and collegiality among faculty members at all Regents universities
and regional institutions, resulting in a more closely knit community of Russian,
East European and Eurasian scholars in Kansas and Central Plains states;
- opportunities for CREES Fellows to present their research findings in CREES
venues, offering students a more diverse range of topics and opinions than
they would otherwise be exposed to by KU faculty alone, and providing the
Fellows with a forum of peers in which to discuss their research;
- opportunities for CREES Fellows and KU faculty to develop joint research,
grant, and teaching projects;
- outreach opportunities, as KU faculty are invited to other institutions
to make public presentations or develop joint projects;
- access for CREES Fellows to a collection of over 425,000 volumes of Slavica
in Watson Library, special collections and rare books in the Spencer Research
Library, and access while at KU to special databases and other electronic
research technologies.
Structure:
To apply for status as a CREES Fellow, Regional faculty and scholars should
send a letter to the Director of CREES stating their academic credentials,
current affiliation, the topic of their research, and the kinds of privileges
they would like from the Center (see list below).
During their time on campus, Fellows may meet in private sessions with
KU Slavic librarians, use KU research facilities, interact with faculty
and area studies students, tour the campus, and visit sites in Lawrence.
Fellows will be invited to KU to give public lectures on their current research
or projects.
- A KUID card as a Visiting Scholar;
- Borrowing privileges at KU libraries;
- Support for photocopying;
- Discount card for the KU Bookstore;
- Eligibility to apply for a modest travel reimbursement and lodging stipend
to cover the expense of a private room in a hotel, dormitory, or campus
housing, or assistance with longer term research housing;
- Parking pass for the duration of the visit or research program;
- Invitations to all CREES lectures, conferences, events, and receptions;
- KU faculty category for discounts on conference registrations;
- Possibility of KU adjunct status;
- Assistance in obtaining visas and in making contacts for field research
in countries of the REES world area.
