As part of a semester-long commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of Soviet Communism in East Central Europe, the Center for Russian. East European, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Kansas announces a conference, "Central Europe 1989: Lessons and Legacies," to be held in Lawrence, KS, October 16-18, 2009. KU CREES welcomes writer Izabela Filipiak, film critic Veronika Ambros, and sociologist Jan Kubik as keynote speakers. 20-minute talks will deal with the question of transition and change in Central European countries and cultures, as it relates to discourses, narratives, myths of identity in a variety of areas, including but not exclusively culture, literature and film, gender, ethnicity, civil and state structures, environment, and economy.
