Computing at KU

We strongly advise REES students to take advantage of the vast array of REES-related resources available to computer users at KU and on the World Wide Web. A number of resources are at your disposal:

  • General Computer Training
  • KU E-mail accounts
  • REES-related listservs
  • KU and CREES listservs

General Computer Training

You should not leave this program without basic computing skills. If you are computing-challenged, confess immediately and register for one of the many training courses available at the Computing Center. They are free to KU students and faculty.

KU E-Mail

To set up an e-mail account, visit KU's Academic Computing Services E-mail page. You must pay a modest annual fee for a dial-up account (to use with a modem from home); ethernet accounts (access from campus only) are free. KU and Lawrence also have many free Wi-Fi zones. Please send us your email address so we can add you to the departmental listserv.

Listservs

"A system that allows people to send e-mail to one address, whereupon their message is copied and sent to all of the other subscribers to the maillist. In this way, people who have many different kinds of e-mail access can participate in discussions together." -from Matisse Enzer's Glossary of Internet Terms

You may subscribe to the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty listserv to receive daily, detailed regional news by sending an e-mail message to either subscribe or unsubscribe.

To subscribe to Civil Society, send the following message:

"SUBSCRIBE CIVILSOC [Yourfirstname] [Yourlastname]"

Then send.

To sign up for Johnson's Russia List, send David Johnson an e-mail and ask to be added.

And while you are cruising the net, remember to bookmark the CREES home page.

STUDENT LISTSERVS

CREES recommends that all students sign up for two local listservs.

1) The first list is the College Graduate Division List. It shares information ranging from changes in KU rules and policies to deadlines to other information that all graduate students should know. To subscribe send the following message:

"sub CLASGRAD-L [firstname] [lastname]"

Do NOT include anything in the message other than the wording above. It must be written in the message section, not in one of the headers. In a day or so, you will receive confirmation of your addition to the list. With problems or questions, call 864-4989.

2) The second list is the CREES List, which forwards job opportunities, reminders of REES events, advising information, new developments in the field, and resources. To subscribe send the following message to :

"sub CREES-L [firstname] [lastname]"

Do NOT include anything in the message other than the wording above. It must be written in the message section, not in one of the headers.
