Summer School of Croatian Language and Culture

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies and Office of Study Abroad provide students with many opportunities to develop their language skills and cultural knowledge through extended study abroad programs. CREES sponsors two summer programs, in St. Petersburg (Russia) and L'viv (Ukraine). The Slavic Languages and Literatures department has organized two other programs in Zagreb and Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Kraków (Poland).

CREES strongly encourages its students to pursue study abroad while in the program. An in-country experience goes a long way toward improving language capability, general education, and subsequent job options. Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) are available to MA or PhD students who wish to study abroad. Application deadline for Summer FLAS is the second Friday in February. The Summer FLAS Fellowship pays all program costs and provides a stipend; it may also cover travel expenses.

Many REES students have also been successful in applying for NSEP awards for study in Bulgaria, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and other countries; several others have received Kosciuszko Scholarships for study in Poland; other students have competed successfully for Fascell Fellowships which place the candidate into internships at embassies and consulates in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
